How We Pick and Score Mattresses
Every recommendation on FindMattress comes from the same research process and the same scoring rules, whether you see it in the quiz, a "best mattress for" list or a brand comparison. This page explains where our data comes from, how the quiz matches you to mattresses, what our ratings mean, and the limits of our approach.
The short version: we combine manufacturers' specs and policies with independent testers' published ratings, convert them into consistent scores, and match those scores to your answers. We haven't physically tested every mattress, and we say so.
Where our data comes from
For each mattress, we collect two kinds of information.
Manufacturer specs and policies. Type, materials, height, firmness options, queen list price, typical sale price, trial length and warranty come from the brand's own website wherever possible. When a brand's site doesn't state something, or blocks automated access, we use a recent, reputable review that does, and we note the source.
Independent performance ratings. Firmness and performance scores come from independent mattress testers that publish their results, such as Tom's Guide, Mattress Clarity, Sleep Foundation, Sleepopolis and RTINGS. These outlets lie on, measure and compare mattresses; we use their published findings rather than our own impressions.
When sources disagree on a trial or warranty, we use the brand's own current terms and note the conflict. When a brand's firmness label differs from independent ratings, we use the independent rating, because labels aren't standardized.
How we rate firmness
We use a 1–10 firmness scale, where 1 is extremely soft and 10 is extremely firm. Each mattress gets a firmness score based on independent testers' ratings:
- If a mattress comes in several firmness options, we average the independent ratings across its main options.
- If no current independent rating exists, for instance after a redesign, we estimate from the brand's label and flag the score as estimated.
- For adjustable air beds, we treat firmness as adjustable rather than forcing a single number.
Read more about the scale in our mattress firmness guide.
Our 1–5 performance ratings
Each mattress is rated from 1 to 5 on five factors:
- Edge support: how stable the perimeter feels for sitting and sleeping near the edge
- Motion isolation: how little movement travels across the bed
- Cooling: how well the mattress avoids trapping heat
- Pressure relief: how well it cushions shoulders, hips and other pressure points
- Bounce: how responsive the surface feels, which affects ease of movement
We convert independent testers' published scores to our 1–5 scale and round half up. Where a tester described a factor without scoring it, we estimate the rating from their written description. When a rating rests on older or less certain information, such as a review of a previous version of the mattress, we flag it as lower confidence in our records and keep looking for a better source.
How the quiz scores mattresses
The quiz turns your answers into a target profile, then scores every mattress against it.
- Target firmness. Your main sleep position sets a firmness range, and your body weight shifts it. Side sleepers start softer, stomach sleepers firmer. Lighter sleepers move a step softer and heavier sleepers a step firmer. Mattresses closest to your target score highest.
- Type preference. If you prefer memory foam, a hybrid, latex or innerspring, matching types score higher. If you have no preference, type doesn't count against any mattress.
- Your needs. If you sleep hot, the cooling rating carries more weight. If you share the bed, motion isolation and edge support count more. If you weigh more, edge support and suitability for heavier bodies count more.
- Budget. Mattresses within your budget, based on their typical queen price, score higher. Those well above it drop down the list.
You then see your top matches, why each fits and its main trade-off. Brands can't pay to change results, and commission rates aren't part of the scoring.
How we choose "best mattress for" picks
Our lists use the same data. We look for mattresses whose firmness, type and ratings fit that sleeper, then weigh price, trial and warranty. Every pick includes a trade-off and who should skip it, and we include mattresses we don't earn from when they're the right fit.
How often we re-check data
Prices and policies change often, especially around sales. We re-check each mattress's price and policies on a rolling basis, aiming for at least once a quarter, and sooner when we learn of a change. Each page shows the date its data was last checked. Prices on our pages are typical figures, not guarantees: always confirm the final price and terms on the seller's site.
What we haven't done (yet)
We have not physically tested every mattress on this site. Our descriptions of feel, cooling and support come from specs, independent testing and owner reviews, not our own nights on the mattress. When we write "on paper" or "independent testers rate it," that's exactly what we mean.
We plan to add hands-on testing, including our own firmness and temperature measurements, and we'll label those results clearly.
