The Sleep Number c2 is not a standard mattress. It's an adjustable air bed, Sleep Number's entry-level model. Inside are dual air chambers you inflate or deflate with a pump, setting each side anywhere from 0 to 100. On top sit a ceramic-gel layer and a 2" comfort layer, and it includes SleepIQ sleep tracking. Because you set the firmness, our 5.5 rating is only an estimate. This Sleep Number c2 review finds it best for couples who disagree on firmness.
Best for: Back sleepers · Combination sleepers · Couples · Back pain
What we like
- Each side adjusts separately from 0 to 100, which suits couples with different needs
- Auto-adjusting firmness and SleepIQ sleep tracking are built in
- 15-year limited warranty
- Strong edges (estimated 4/5) thanks to a foam border
Watch out for
- Only 8" tall, with a 2" comfort layer, so pressure relief is modest (estimated 3/5)
- Requires Sleep Number's base and pump system, so it isn't a simple boxed bed
- Very little bounce (estimated 2/5)
- Independent data is thin, since the only review we found covered an older c2 version
How the Sleep Number c2 adjustable air bed feels
Instead of a fixed firmness, you choose a Sleep Number from 0 (softest) to 100 (firmest) for each side. Low settings feel cushioned, and high settings feel taut and firm. The 5.5 in our data is a placeholder from Sleep Number's label, not a measured feel. With only 2" of comfort material over the air chambers, the top feels thinner than a typical foam or hybrid mattress.
The auto-adjusting feature can change firmness as you move during the night, and SleepIQ tracks your sleep through the bed. If you don't care about tracking, you're still paying for that system.
Best (and worst) sleeping positions
Back sleepers and combination sleepers can dial in support, and they can adjust as their needs change. Couples are the clearest fit, because one partner can sleep at 35 and the other at 70. People with back pain often like being able to fine-tune support, though see a doctor or physical therapist for persistent pain. Side sleepers who need deep cushioning may find the thin comfort layer limiting. Anyone who wants a springy, bouncy surface will be disappointed.
Because changing your number is easy, use the 100-night trial to experiment with different settings.
Cooling, motion and edges
These 1–5 ratings are rough estimates from a 2023 review of an older c2, so treat them cautiously. Edges are about 4, thanks to the foam border. Motion isolation is about 4, since separate chambers limit transfer. Cooling is about 3, with help from the ceramic-gel layer. Bounce is low, at about 2.
Price, trial and warranty
Sleep Number's 2026 page lists the queen at about $1,299, with no discount shown. You'll also need Sleep Number's base and pump setup, so check what's included and what costs extra. You get a 100-night trial and a 15-year limited warranty, which is shorter than the 25 years on the older model.
How it compares
Sleep Number vs Tempur-Pedic sets adjustable air against dense memory foam. Tempur offers far more pressure relief but no adjustability. Saatva vs Sleep Number suits shoppers choosing between a luxury innerspring with three fixed firmness levels and a dial. Nectar vs Sleep Number is the value angle. The c2 also appears in our best mattress for couples roundup.

Our verdict
The Sleep Number c2 makes sense if you and your partner can't agree on firmness, or if you want sleep tracking and the ability to change support over time. It's not a plush bed, and it isn't simple, because you're buying into a pump-and-base system. Side sleepers who want deep cushioning should look elsewhere.

Questions about the Sleep Number c2
What is a Sleep Number bed?
It's an adjustable air bed. Air chambers inside the mattress are inflated by a pump, and you choose a firmness from 0 to 100. The c2 has dual chambers, so each side of a queen or larger can be set separately.
Is the Sleep Number c2 good for side sleepers?
It can work at a lower setting, but its comfort layer is only 2" thick, so pressure relief is modest. Side sleepers who want a plush, deep-contouring feel may prefer a medium memory foam or hybrid mattress.
Does the Sleep Number c2 need a special base?
The c2 is designed to work with Sleep Number's base and pump system. Check what's included in the price and what's sold separately before you order. The pump also needs power, so plan for an outlet near the bed.
