The Bear Elite Hybrid is a 14" luxury hybrid with 8" 5-zone pocketed coils and copper-infused memory foam. It has a Celliant infrared cover and an optional CoolForce cooling layer. It comes in Soft, Medium and Firm, rated about 5, 6 and 7 out of 10, which averages 6. This Bear Elite Hybrid review finds it a supportive, plush-topped option for side, back and combination sleepers, couples and people with back pain. Hot sleepers should note that independent cooling tests are weaker than the marketing suggests.

What we like

  • Three firmness levels make it easy to match your sleep position
  • 5-zone coils and edge support rated 5/5
  • Thick 14" profile with a premium, cushioned feel
  • Limited lifetime warranty and free in-home setup

Watch out for

  • Cooling only 3/5, and Mattress Clarity measured a large temperature rise in testing
  • 120-night trial is shorter than Saatva's or Nectar's year
  • Price sources conflict, and the queen sale price depends on discount codes

Bear Elite Hybrid feel and firmness

Choose by position. Soft (about 5/10) is a medium-soft for lighter side sleepers. Medium (about 6/10) is the all-rounder. Firm (about 7/10) suits back and stomach sleepers. In each model, the memory foam gives a gentle contour, and the zoned coils firm up under the hips. It feels substantial and plush on top, with plenty of support underneath.

The 5-zone coils are the key support feature. They give a little more under the shoulders and a little more support under the lower back and hips, which matters most for back sleepers and people with lower-back discomfort. At 14", it's one of the tallest beds in our dataset, so check that your fitted sheets have deep enough pockets.

Best (and worst) sleeping positions

Side sleepers should pick Soft or Medium, because the zoning eases the shoulder and supports the hip. Back sleepers and people with lower-back discomfort tend to land on Medium or Firm. Talk to a doctor or physical therapist about ongoing pain. Stomach sleepers can use the Firm, but at about 7/10 it is not the firmest bed here. Hot sleepers are the main group to steer away.

Cooling, motion and edges

Edge support scores 5, so the reinforced coil perimeter makes the full 14" surface usable. Motion isolation is a 4, good for couples. Cooling is a 3. Despite the Celliant cover and copper foam, Mattress Clarity recorded a large temperature rise in its cooling test. The optional CoolForce layer may help, but we have no separate data for it.

Price, trial and warranty

Bear's site lists the queen at about $2,284, often discounted to around $1,485 with a sitewide code. Mattress Clarity lists a higher queen price, so prices clearly change. You get a 120-night trial, a limited lifetime warranty and free in-home setup. It is ACA endorsed and GREENGUARD Gold certified.

How it compares

The WinkBed is its closest rival. It is a zoned, firmness-choice luxury hybrid with a pillow top and better motion isolation, at a lower list price. The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe has the same three-feel approach for less money, with better pressure relief. The Saatva Classic suits hot sleepers who want a luxury coil bed. Bear also appears in our best hybrid mattress roundup, alongside other zoned coil beds.

Our verdict

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a well-built, zoned luxury hybrid with excellent edges and a firmness for nearly every position. It's a good fit for couples and back-pain shoppers who sleep neutral or cool. Skip it if you sleep hot, because independent cooling results are only average, or if you want a full-year trial.

Questions about the Bear Elite Hybrid

Which Bear Elite Hybrid firmness should I get?

Side sleepers under about 180 lbs: Soft. Most side, back and combination sleepers: Medium. Stomach sleepers and back sleepers over about 230 lbs: Firm. Bear rates them roughly 5, 6 and 7 out of 10.

Does the Bear Elite Hybrid sleep cool?

Not especially. It has a Celliant cover and copper-infused foam, but Mattress Clarity measured a large temperature rise in testing. We rate cooling 3 out of 5. The optional CoolForce layer is worth considering if you run warm.

Does Bear set up the mattress?

Yes. Bear lists free in-home setup for the Elite Hybrid, which helps with a heavy 14" bed. It also comes with a 120-night trial and a limited lifetime warranty, which is useful protection for a bed at this price.
