The Birch Natural is a 10" organic latex hybrid with an organic cotton cover, New Zealand wool, a natural organic latex comfort layer and individually wrapped coils. The wool also acts as the fire barrier, so there are no chemical flame retardants. Testers rate it 6.5 out of 10, a medium-firm feel. This Birch Natural mattress review finds it a breathable, eco-minded option for back and combination sleepers and hot sleepers. It costs less than the bigger organic names, though side sleepers will want more cushioning.

What we like

  • Cooling rated 5/5 thanks to wool, cotton, latex and coils
  • Wool fire barrier means no chemical flame retardants
  • GOLS organic latex, GREENGUARD Gold and ACA endorsement
  • Limited lifetime warranty, and cheaper than Saatva and Avocado latex hybrids

Watch out for

  • Pressure relief is only 3/5, a weak spot for side sleepers
  • 10" profile is on the slim side for heavier sleepers
  • The trial is described in terms of exchanges, so read the return terms carefully

Birch Natural feel and firmness

A 6.5 out of 10 lands in medium-firm territory, but latex makes it feel different from foam at the same number. The surface is springy and lifts you up, with only light contouring. The wool top adds a little softness, but you'll mainly feel the bounce of latex and coils.

The organic latex comfort layer is what sets Birch apart from foam beds at a similar price. Latex responds instantly, so you won't leave an impression when you move, and it doesn't trap heat the way dense memory foam can. The trade-off is a firmer, more buoyant feel at the shoulders.

Best (and worst) sleeping positions

Back sleepers are the best match, because the even, buoyant support keeps the spine neutral. Combination sleepers like how easily they can turn (bounce 4/5). Stomach sleepers under about 200 lbs often find it supportive enough. Side sleepers are where it falls short. With pressure relief at 3/5, testers found it adequate only for back and stomach sleeping. Lighter side sleepers in particular may feel shoulder pressure.

Cooling, motion and edges

Cooling is the highlight at 5. Natural fibers and latex breathe, and coils add airflow. Edge support and motion isolation are both 4, which is strong for a latex bed. Couples should notice little jostling.

Price, trial and warranty

Birch lists the queen at about $1,865, often available for around $1,399 with a promo code. Birch's site lists a 120-night trial, but its wording focuses on exchanges, so confirm how returns work before you buy. The limited lifetime warranty is generous. Tom's Guide's 2025 review listed 11" and 100 nights, so the specs have recently changed.

At 10" tall, Birch is slimmer than most hybrids here, which leaves heavier sleepers less material between them and the coils. If you weigh over about 230 lbs, the thicker, firmer Avocado is the safer latex choice.

How it compares

The Avocado Green Mattress is the best-known organic latex hybrid. It's firmer, with 5/5 edges and motion isolation and more firmness options, but costs more. Saatva vs Avocado covers both premium brands. The Saatva Latex Hybrid uses springier Talalay latex at a slightly softer 6/10 and comes with white-glove delivery. Birch also appears in our best cooling mattress guide.

Our verdict

The Birch Natural is a cool, clean-materials latex hybrid for back and combination sleepers. It costs less than the organic leaders and comes with a lifetime warranty. Skip it if you're a side sleeper who needs deep pressure relief or you want a simple, no-questions-asked return. Read Birch's trial terms first.

Questions about the Birch Natural

Is the Birch Natural mattress good for side sleepers?

It's not the best fit. Testers found its pressure relief adequate for back and stomach sleepers, and we rate it 3/5. Heavier side sleepers may be fine. Lighter side sleepers are likely to feel firm pressure at the shoulders.

Does the Birch mattress use flame retardants?

Birch uses New Zealand wool as a natural fire barrier instead of chemical flame retardants. It also carries GOLS organic latex and GREENGUARD Gold certifications. Wool also breathes well, which contributes to the bed's 5/5 cooling rating.

Can you return a Birch mattress?

Birch lists a 120-night trial, but its official wording describes the trial in terms of exchanges. Check the current return and refund terms on Birch's site before you order. Ask how refunds work and whether any fees apply.
