The Avocado Green Mattress is a handmade-in-USA organic latex hybrid. It uses GOLS organic Dunlop latex, organic wool and a GOTS organic cotton cover over zoned pocketed coils. It now comes in several comfort levels, from Ultra Plush to Extra Firm. Our 7 out of 10 rating and performance scores come from Tom's Guide's test of the original firm build. This Avocado Green Mattress review finds it a standout for back and stomach sleepers, heavier bodies, hot sleepers and shoppers who prioritize certifications.

Best for: Back sleepers · Stomach sleepers · Combination sleepers · Hot sleepers · Heavier bodies · Eco / natural

What we like

  • Cooling, edge support and motion isolation all rated 5/5
  • The longest list of eco certifications in our dataset, including GOTS, GOLS, GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE and EWG Verified
  • Dense Dunlop latex and zoned coils hold up well under heavier sleepers
  • 365-night trial

Watch out for

  • The tested 7/10 firm build is too firm for most side sleepers
  • About $2,099 for a queen at list price
  • The warranty is 25 years, but only 10 are full coverage and the rest is prorated
  • Latex's springy push-back isn't for people who want a memory foam hug

Avocado feel and firmness

At 7 out of 10, the tested Avocado is firm. Dunlop latex is dense and buoyant, so you sit up on the surface, and the bed pushes back quickly when you move. Avocado now sells Medium (11"), Firm (11.5") and Plush (13") heights, plus Extra Firm and Ultra Plush options. The independent scores here apply to the firm build, so softer versions will feel different.

Best (and worst) sleeping positions

Back sleepers over about 130 lbs and stomach sleepers get excellent hip support. Heavier sleepers over about 230 lbs benefit from dense latex and zoned coils that resist sagging. Combination sleepers like the bounce (estimated 4/5). Side sleepers are the weak spot on the firm build, since a 7/10 latex surface will feel hard at the shoulders. If you sleep on your side, look at the Plush or Medium version instead.

If you're between versions, Medium (11") is the safest compromise for combination sleepers. Keep in mind that it hasn't been independently rated the way the firm build has.

Cooling, motion and edges

This is one of the best all-round performers in our data. Cooling is a 5, thanks to latex, wool, cotton and coils that all breathe. Edges are a 5, and so is motion isolation, which is rare for a latex hybrid. Couples get a cool, stable bed without the usual latex jiggle.

Price, trial and warranty

Tom's Guide lists the queen at about $2,099, often on sale for around $1,889. Avocado's own page shows prices from $1,189, but that's for the smallest size. The 365-night trial is generous. The 25-year limited warranty includes 10 years of full coverage, then prorated coverage.

The warranty and trial are worth understanding. Many online brands offer lifetime warranties, but Avocado's coverage becomes prorated after year 10, so you'd pay part of the cost on a later claim. The 365-night trial, by contrast, is as long as any in our dataset.

How it compares

Saatva vs Avocado compares it with the Saatva Latex Hybrid, which uses springier Talalay latex at a softer 6/10 and costs more. The Birch Natural is the cheaper organic latex hybrid, slightly softer at 6.5/10 with a lifetime warranty. Avocado also appears in our best mattress for heavy people roundup.

Our verdict

The Avocado Green is one of the best picks in our dataset for back and stomach sleepers who sleep hot, weigh more, or want certified organic materials. It scores 5/5 on cooling, edges and motion. Side sleepers should choose a plusher version or another bed, and know that warranty coverage is prorated after year 10.
