The Best Firm Mattresses
We may earn a commission when you buy through our links. It never changes our picks. How we make money.

The best firm mattress for most people is the Saatva Classic in its Firm setting. An independent reviewer rated that version about 8/10, and its coil-on-coil support, 5/5 edges and lifetime warranty are hard to match. For a firm hybrid at a lower price, the Helix Dawn is the pick. On a tight budget, the Siena Signature is the cheapest firm bed here.
A firm mattress, roughly 7-8.5 on a 10-point scale, keeps your hips from sinking. That suits stomach sleepers, most back sleepers and heavier bodies. It's usually the wrong choice for side sleepers, who need the shoulder and hip to sink in a little.
We haven't slept on these mattresses. Picks come from the specs, brand policies and independent reviewers' firmness scores and 1-5 ratings. Where a firmness number is the brand's own label rather than an independent score, we say so.

Our picks, in detail
Saatva Classic
Innerspring · Plush Soft / Luxury Firm / Firm
- $1,895 queen
- 365 nights
- Lifetime
- 11.5″ tall
The Saatva Classic comes in three feels, and the Firm one is genuinely firm: about 8/10 from one independent reviewer. Two layers of coils give a level, supportive surface, Saatva's Lumbar Zone adds extra support under your lower back, and the 3-inch Euro pillow top stops "firm" from feeling like a floor.
It rates 5/5 for edge support, pressure relief and cooling. You get a 365-night trial, a lifetime warranty and free white-glove delivery. Expect about $2,229 for a queen at list price, often around $1,895.
The trade-off: it's the most expensive pick here, and Firm is too hard for most side sleepers. Choose Luxury Firm if you switch positions.
Helix Dawn
Hybrid · Firm
- $1,478 queen
- 100 nights
- 10 years
- 11.5″ tall
The Helix Dawn is built to be firm, rated about 7/10 by an independent reviewer, with memory foam and polyfoam over up to 1,000 wrapped coils and reinforced edges. That gives back and stomach sleepers a supportive, slightly bouncy surface with 5/5 edge support.
Mattress Clarity lists the queen at about $1,478 before discounts, and Helix runs frequent sales. It comes with a 100-night trial. Warranty length differs between sources, so confirm it at checkout.
The trade-off: pressure relief rates 3/5, so side sleepers will likely feel it at the shoulder. Motion isolation is average, so a restless partner may wake you. Side sleepers should look at its sibling in our Helix brand overview.
Nectar Classic Memory Foam
Memory foam · Firm
- $699 queen
- 365 nights
- Lifetime
- 12″ tall
Nectar now labels the Classic as Firm, and independent testers agree at about 7.5/10. It has just 1 inch of memory foam over a dense support core, so you get a little contouring without much sink. It rates 5/5 for edges, unusual for all-foam, and 4/5 for motion isolation.
It's also excellent value: about $1,615 for a queen at list price, often around $699, with a 365-night trial and a lifetime warranty.
The trade-off: pressure relief rates 3/5 and there's little bounce, so combination sleepers may find it slow to move on. Compare it to the softer brand flagship in Nectar vs Purple.
Avocado Green Mattress
Latex hybrid · Medium (also Firm, Plush; Extra Firm and Ultra Plush listed)
- $1,889 queen
- 365 nights
- 25 years
- 11″ tall
Heavier sleepers need firmness that lasts, and the Avocado Green's organic Dunlop latex over zoned coils is a durable, buoyant combination. The tested build rates about 7/10, and Avocado also lists a Firm and an Extra Firm version. It rates 5/5 for edge support, motion isolation and cooling.
It's GOTS and GOLS certified and handmade in the USA. Expect about $2,099 for a queen at list price, often around $1,889, with a 365-night trial and a 25-year warranty.
The trade-off: latex feels springy rather than sink-in, and the price is high. Lighter side sleepers should choose its Medium or Plush feel or another bed entirely.
Amerisleep AS2
Memory foam · Medium-firm
- $1,549 queen
- 100 nights
- 20 years
- 12″ tall
The Amerisleep AS2 rates about 7.5/10 from an independent reviewer (the brand calls it 6), and adds a 5-zone HIVE layer that firms up under the hips. That's helpful for back and stomach sleepers with lower back pain. It's endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association, made in the USA, and backed by a 20-year warranty. The queen lists at about $1,549.
The trade-off: reviewers say it isn't for side sleepers, pressure relief rates 3/5 and the 100-night trial is average. For more options, see the best mattresses for back pain.
Siena Signature 10" Memory Foam
Memory foam · Medium-firm
- $329 queen
- 180 nights
- 10 years
- 10″ tall
At around $329 for a queen on sale, the Siena Signature is the cheapest firm bed here. Siena calls it medium-firm, but an independent reviewer tested it as firm, about 8/10. It rates 5/5 for motion isolation and comes with a 180-night trial and a 10-year warranty.
That makes it a sensible choice for a guest room, a teen or a back or stomach sleeper on a strict budget.
The trade-off: the same reviewer found pressure relief lacking for side sleepers and noticed weaker edges after 10 months. It's a simple 10-inch foam bed, so heavier sleepers should spend more.

Who should buy a firm mattress
- Stomach sleepers: about 7-8. A firm surface keeps the pelvis from sinking and arching your lower back.
- Back sleepers: about 6-7.5. Medium-firm to firm keeps your spine level without pressure at the tailbone.
- Heavier sleepers (over 230 lb): add about one point to your position's range and choose coils or latex, which resist sagging better than all-foam.
- Side sleepers: usually no. Most do best around 5-6.5. See our best mattresses for side sleepers.
Lighter sleepers (under 130 lb) feel any mattress as firmer than heavier people do, so subtract about a point.
The mattress firmness scale
- Soft (1-3) Deep hug. Mostly lighter side sleepers.
- Medium-soft (4-5) Cushioned shoulders and hips. Side sleepers.
- Medium (5-6) Balanced. Combination sleepers. Examples: Purple Restore Hybrid, Saatva Classic, Sleep Number c2, Zinus Original Green Tea Memory Foam
- Medium-firm (6-7) The most popular range. Back and combination sleepers. Examples: Bear Elite Hybrid, Birch Natural, Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe, Cocoon by Sealy Chill Memory Foam
- Firm (7-8) Flat support. Stomach sleepers and heavier back sleepers. Examples: Allswell 10" Hybrid, Amerisleep AS2, Avocado Green Mattress, Casper The One
- Extra-firm (8-10) Minimal sink. Some heavier stomach sleepers. Examples: Siena Signature 10" Memory Foam

Firm foam vs firm hybrid
A firm all-foam bed like the Nectar Classic or Siena isolates motion well and costs less, but it has less bounce and can feel warm. A firm hybrid like the Helix Dawn or Avocado Green adds coils for airflow, edge support and an easier time changing positions. Our hybrid vs memory foam guide goes deeper, and you can browse the best hybrid mattresses or best memory foam mattresses.
Other firm options we considered
The DreamCloud Classic Hybrid (around $699 for a queen) and the Tuft & Needle Original (around $559) are both labeled Firm by their brands, but there's no current independent firmness score for their latest versions, so we left them off the main list. The Tuft & Needle Original also rates low on edge support.
Firm mattresses and hot sleepers
Firm beds sleep cooler because you sink in less. The coolest firm option here is the Avocado Green. For more, see the best cooling mattresses.
Too firm? Check before you commit
Expect a short break-in period of a few weeks. If you still wake with sore shoulders or hips after that, the bed is likely too firm for you. Use the trial: our mattress trial and return policies guide explains the fine print. Plan timing with the best time to buy a mattress, confirm your mattress size, check how long mattresses last and plan for mattress disposal. Our pillar guide, how to choose a mattress, ties it together.
Frequently asked questions
Is a firm mattress better for your back?
Not for everyone. A firm mattress helps stomach sleepers and many back sleepers keep their spine level, especially heavier people. But very firm beds can create pressure points and push the spine out of line for side sleepers. Most people with back pain do best at medium-firm, around 6-7. Persistent back pain is worth discussing with a doctor or physical therapist.
What firmness number is considered firm?
On the 1-10 scale most reviewers use, about 7-8.5 is firm, and 9-10 is extra firm. Medium-firm is roughly 6-7, and medium about 5-6. Brand labels don't always match these numbers. Siena calls its mattress medium-firm, for example, while an independent reviewer rated it about 8/10, so check independent scores when you can.
Do firm mattresses soften over time?
Most mattresses soften a little in the first few weeks as the comfort layers break in, and continue to soften gradually over years. All-foam beds usually soften faster than latex or coil beds. If you're between two firmness levels and weigh over 230 lb, choosing the firmer option and a coil or latex build helps it stay supportive longer.
Are firm mattresses good for side sleepers?
Usually not. Side sleepers need the shoulder and hip to sink in enough to keep the spine straight, and a firm surface pushes back too hard. That can cause shoulder pain, hip pain or numb arms. Heavier side sleepers may tolerate medium-firm, around 6-7, but most side sleepers are better off around 5-6.5.
How can I make a mattress that's too firm feel softer?
A soft mattress topper, 2-3 inches of memory foam or latex, is the quickest fix and can make a firm bed comfortable for side sleeping. Giving the mattress a few weeks to break in also helps a little. If it still feels wrong, use the sleep trial to exchange it for a softer model rather than living with it.
