The Tuft & Needle Original is one of the best-known budget foam beds, and it has changed. The current version is the 12" T&N Original Mattress II, labeled Firm. It replaces the older 10" medium-firm model that most reviews describe. It uses graphite- and gel-infused T&N Adaptive foam over support and base foam. We estimate it at 7.5 out of 10 from the brand's label. This Tuft and Needle Original review sees it as a no-frills, made-in-USA pick for back and stomach sleepers on a budget.
Best for: Back sleepers · Stomach sleepers · Budget
What we like
- About $599 for a queen at list price, often around $560 on sale
- A firm feel suits back and stomach sleepers
- Adaptive foam responds faster than traditional memory foam (bounce estimated 3/5)
- Fiberglass-free, CertiPUR-US and made in the USA
Watch out for
- Firmness and ratings are estimates, because no independent test of the Original II exists yet
- Weak edges (estimated 2/5) make the perimeter less usable
- Pressure relief (estimated 3/5) is limited for side sleepers
- 100-night trial and 10-year warranty, versus a full year at Nectar
Tuft & Needle Original II feel and firmness
Tuft & Needle now labels the Original Firm, which we translate to about 7.5 out of 10. The Adaptive foam is closer to a responsive polyfoam than a slow-sinking memory foam. You get a light give at the surface and then flat, even support. If an older review calls it a 6.5/10 medium-firm, that was the previous 10" bed.
Graphite and gel are infused into the Adaptive foam to help draw heat away. At 12" tall, the Original II is 2" thicker than the old model and as thick as the Nectar Classic.
Best (and worst) sleeping positions
On paper, back sleepers over about 130 lbs and stomach sleepers up to around 230 lbs are the fit. A firm foam surface keeps the hips from sinking. Combination sleepers who stay on their back and stomach will appreciate that the foam doesn't trap you. Side sleepers, particularly under about 180 lbs, will likely find it hard at the shoulder and hip. A softer bed or a topper is a better path for them.
Cooling, motion and edges
These 1-5 ratings come from descriptions of the older version, so treat them as low confidence. Motion isolation is about 4, which is good for couples. Cooling is about 3. The graphite and gel help, but it's still all foam. Edges are the clear weakness at about 2, so sitting on the side causes noticeable compression.
Price, trial and warranty
About $599 for a queen at list price and often around $560 on sale, it's one of the cheapest name-brand beds here. You get a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty. That's fair, but it falls short of the year-long trials and lifetime warranties at Nectar and Leesa.
Tuft & Needle's appeal has always been simplicity: one bed, one feel and a fair price.
How it compares
Casper vs Tuft & Needle sets it against Casper's similar-firmness all-foam The One, which isolates motion better. Nectar vs Tuft & Needle is the key budget matchup. Nectar has stronger edges and longer policies at similar sale prices. Purple vs Tuft & Needle suits side sleepers who want more pressure relief. For a softer budget foam bed, see the Zinus Green Tea. The T&N also appears in our best budget mattress list.

Our verdict
The Tuft & Needle Original is a simple, affordable firm foam bed for back and stomach sleepers who don't need strong edges or long policies. Because the current Original II hasn't been independently rated, use the 100-night trial to confirm the fit. Side sleepers and anyone who sits on the edge a lot should look elsewhere.

Questions about the Tuft & Needle Original Mattress
Did Tuft & Needle change the Original Mattress?
Yes. The current model is the T&N Original Mattress II, which is 12" tall and labeled Firm. The earlier 10" version was rated medium-firm (about 6.5/10) by testers. Reviews of the older bed may not reflect how the new one feels.
Is the Tuft & Needle Original good for side sleepers?
Probably not for most. It's labeled Firm, which we estimate at 7.5/10, and pressure relief is limited. Heavier side sleepers may be fine. Lighter side sleepers usually do better on a medium bed with more cushioning.
Is Tuft & Needle made in the USA?
Yes. Tuft & Needle lists the Original as made in the USA. It is also fiberglass-free and CertiPUR-US certified. It's also one of the cheapest name-brand beds in our dataset, at about $599 for a queen at list price.
