The Layla Memory Foam Mattress is a flippable 10.5" all-foam bed. One side is medium soft, rated about 6 out of 10 by Sleepopolis. Flip it over and you get a medium-firm side at about 7. Both sides use copper-gel high-resilience memory foam around a zoned transition layer and base core. This Layla mattress review finds it a flexible, low-risk pick for side, back and combination sleepers and couples. Stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers are better served elsewhere, according to independent testing.

Best for: Side sleepers · Back sleepers · Combination sleepers · Couples

What we like

  • Two firmness levels in one bed, so you can flip it if your first choice isn't right
  • Motion isolation rated 5/5, excellent for couples
  • Copper-gel foam and zoned transition layer, with cooling rated 4/5
  • Lifetime warranty and made in the USA

Watch out for

  • Sleepopolis says neither side suits average-weight stomach sleepers or people over 230 lbs
  • Pressure relief averages only 3/5 across both sides
  • 120-night trial, shorter than Nectar's or Leesa's 365 nights

Layla feel and firmness on each side

The soft side, about 6/10, has a gentle memory foam sink and suits side sleepers. The firm side, about 7/10, keeps you more on top and suits back sleepers. Our 6.5 rating is the average of the two. In practice, choose a side based on how you sleep. The copper-gel foam is relatively responsive for memory foam, so you won't feel stuck.

The zoned transition layer sits in the middle of the bed, so it works whichever side faces up. It's designed to give a little more support under the hips than under the shoulders, which helps both sides feel balanced.

Best (and worst) sleeping positions

Side sleepers under about 200 lbs should start on the soft side. Back sleepers should try the firm side first. Combination sleepers can try each for a couple of weeks and keep the one that suits them. According to Sleepopolis, stomach sleepers of average weight and anyone over about 230 lbs aren't well served by either side. Firmer support or a coil hybrid would suit them better.

Cooling, motion and edges

Motion isolation is a 5, so a partner's movement barely registers. Cooling is a 4, good for an all-foam bed, thanks to the copper-gel foam and textured cover. Edges are a 4, better than most foam beds, and bounce is a moderate 3.

Price, trial and warranty

Expect about $1,149 for a queen at list price, often on sale for around $999. You get a 120-night trial and a lifetime warranty. Since you can flip the bed to change the feel, your chance of needing a return is lower than with a single-feel bed.

The flippable design works as its own kind of insurance. If the soft side feels too soft a few weeks in, you can flip the mattress instead of starting a return, which makes the 120-night trial go further.

How it compares

The Leesa Original is a cheaper single-feel medium foam bed with a 365-night trial and the same 5/5 motion isolation. Casper The One is closer to Layla's firm side at 7/10, but without the option to flip it. If you want a hybrid, the Nectar Premier Hybrid offers a medium memory foam feel over coils. Our verdict

The Layla is a good choice if you aren't sure how firm you want your mattress, or if your needs change. It gives you two firmness levels, top-rated motion isolation and a lifetime warranty. Skip it if you sleep on your stomach, weigh over about 230 lbs, or need maximum pressure relief.

Questions about the Layla Memory Foam Mattress

Which side of the Layla mattress is softer?

Layla labels one side medium soft (about 6/10 per Sleepopolis) and the other medium firm (about 7/10). The soft side is usually best for side sleepers, and the firm side is better for back sleepers.

Is the Layla mattress good for heavy people?

Not especially. Sleepopolis says neither side suits sleepers over 230 lbs. Heavier sleepers will generally get better support from a thicker coil hybrid. Sleepopolis says average-weight stomach sleepers have the same problem.

How often should you flip a Layla mattress?

You only need to flip it to change the feel. If you stick with one side, rotating it head-to-foot now and then can help it wear evenly.
